What is Telstra Desktop Messaging?
Telstra Desktop Messaging (TDM) is a service that enables you to send SMS messages to mobile phones using a web-based interface as well as an email client (EmailSMS) and any applications integrated with the XML API it supports. It is a fast and easy to use communication method to keep you in touch with your employees, customers, family and friends.

What do I do if I have a problem logging in?
If you are having a problem logging in to the Telstra Desktop Messaging service, please ensure that you have entered your login details correctly. Your login details are case sensitive so ensure that your Caps Lock is not on.
If you are still experiencing difficulties, click the link on the home page to have your password emailed to you. If problems persist, contact your company's Telstra Desktop Messaging administrator for assistance. Alternatively, contact Telstra – details are available in the Help pages.

What is SMS and MMS?
SMS is a Short Message Service text message that can be sent to or from most mobile phones. It is typically made up of 160 text characters.
MMS is a Multimedia Message Service message that can be sent to or from most currently released mobile phones. It is typically made up of a combination of text and a piece of multimedia content. The content can be in the form of a graphic image, a video clip or an audio clip.

Why can I only send 160 characters?
The reason you can only send 160 characters in each message is because your company's Telstra Desktop Messaging System Administrator has restricted your permission group from sending long SMS messages.
Please contact your company's Telstra Desktop Messaging System Administrator if you require long SMS to be enabled for your permission group.

Who can receive an SMS text message sent from Telstra Desktop
Messaging?
Any mobile phone capable of receiving SMS text messages can receive an SMS text message from Telstra Desktop Messaging.
NOTE: All users must comply to applicable laws. For example, anti-spam and telecommunication legislations must be observed. Please also refer to restrictions that are set out in Telstra Desktop Messaging Terms and Conditions.

Can I send messages to non-Telstra phones?
Yes, you can send SMS text messages to compatible mobile phones anywhere in the world, provided your account administrator allows. Delivery is not guaranteed, however, and delivery to some international destinations may be less reliable.

How do I send a message?
To send a message, go to the SEND screen, and follow the steps outlined below:
- Type recipients mobile numbers or select from QUICK CONTACTS.
- Enter your message in the Compose Message area of the screen. Single-part short messages are limited to 160 characters. Long messages will be accepted and sent as multi-part, and that is available to users for which that is enabled. As you type your message, the CHARACTERS REMAINING field shows you how many more characters you can type. The system will prevent you from typing more than your configured limit.
- Click SEND NOW. Your message will be sent to the recipient you specified.
Note: You can also schedule the message for later delivery.

How do I send a message to multiple recipients?
To send a message to multiple recipients, go to the required SEND screen. Then follow the steps outlined below:
- Type mobile numbers for recipients or use the Shift and Control keys to select numerous message recipient from QUICK CONTACTS.
- Compose the message.
- Click SEND NOW. Your message will be sent to the recipients you specified.
Note: When entering recipients by typing the mobile number in the TO field, separate the numbers with semi-colons.
Note: You can also schedule the message for later delivery.

Is there a limit on the number of messages I can send?
Your company's Telstra Desktop Messaging System Administrator may have set a monthly limit on the number of messages you can send. Your message limit is displayed in the Credit Remaining field on the SEND SMS and SEND MMS screens. Your limit is automatically re-set on a monthly basis. Unused messages are not carried over to the following month.
If you run out of messages, contact your company's Telstra Desktop Messaging System Administrator. Telstra is unable to increase your individual monthly limit.

Will I have access to all functions in the Telstra Desktop Messaging
system?
Your System Administrator may have restricted your access to some of the features of Telstra Desktop Messaging. In this case, you will not be able to complete the tasks that you do not have access to. Please contact your System Administrator for access.
Telstra is unable to change your access permissions. -
How do I recall a message that I have previously sent?
You cannot recall a message once you have clicked the send button. Therefore, check the content and message recipients before you send the message.

How do I view messages that I have sent?
To view messages which you have sent previously, click the SENT menu option, enter search criteria and click SEARCH.

What is the sent messages log?
The sent messages log stores all messages that you have sent for the last 3 months (minimum) and is like the Sent Items folder in your email application. By accessing the sent messages log, you will only see those messages which you have sent.
You can search for messages in the sent messages log at any time to retrieve or view a message that you sent earlier. For more details, check the online help.

How do I schedule a message for later delivery?
To schedule a message for later delivery, follow the steps outlined below:
- Compose your message in the normal way by entering the message recipients and the message text (see steps outlined above).
- Click SEND LATER.
- Select the START DATE from the calendar.
- Enter the delivery time in the HOUR and MIN fields.
- Click OK.

Can I schedule a message for recurring delivery?
Yes. To schedule a message for recurring delivery, follow the steps outlined below:
- Compose your message in the normal way by entering the message recipients and the message text (see steps outlined above).
- Click SEND LATER.
- Select the START DATE from the calendar.
- Enter the delivery time in the HOUR and MIN fields.
- Select the recurring PERIOD (Daily, Weekly, Monthly, Yearly) and configure the message delivery days.
- Click OK.

How do I view messages that I have scheduled for future delivery?
To view messages that you have scheduled for future delivery, follow the steps outlined below:
- Click on the SCHEDULED MESSAGES menu.
- All your scheduled messages are displayed.

How do I delete messages that I have scheduled for future delivery?
To delete a message that you have scheduled for future delivery, follow the steps outlined below:
- Click on the SCHEDULED MESSAGES menu.
- All your scheduled messages are displayed.
- Click DELETE next to the message to be deleted.

What is the Quick Contacts?
The Quick Contacts allows you to store the contact details of your employees or customers and provides you with easy access to your contacts when you are sending messages.
Entries in your contacts are sorted by personal contacts or company contacts and entries may be stored as individual contacts or you may add your contacts to a group. Messages can be sent to any combination of individuals or groups in your contacts.

What is a Message Template?
A message template is a message which you can select for sending over and over. For example, you may send a particular message on a regular basis and rather than re-type the message each time you can save the message as a template to re-use again.

What is Mail Merge?
Mail merge allows you to send an SMS message to multiple recipients and have the message customised for each individual recipient. Remember that there are important restrictions on who you can send Telstra Desktop Messaging messages to, and for what reason which apply equally to messages sent using Mail Merge. You should read the Telstra Desktop Messaging Terms and Conditions carefully before using Mail Merge.

Can a message recipient reply to a message that I send?
Yes.
When you login to Desktop Messaging and send a message to a mobile phone, the owner of the mobile phone will see the sender being either you (“Personal Mobile”), your TDM account (“Company Inbox”), or a generic number from a shared TDM pool (“Personal Inbox” or “Email Address”). That will determine where the reply will arrive:
- Your mobile phone
- Company Inbox
- Personal Inbox

Who is my company's Telstra Desktop Messaging System Administrator?
Your System Administrator is the person you normally call when you have a problem with your computer. This may be your company's Computer Help Desk.

Who do I call for assistance?
First point of call would be your TDM account administrator. If that fails, please get in touch with Telstra.

What is EmailSMS?
EmailSMS is the functionality that enables TDM users to send SMS messages to mobile phones from their email application.

How do I send a message to a list of mobile phone numbers?
To send a message to a list of mobile phone numbers that are not in your Address Book, you can use the "Bulk Number Send" feature. For more detailed information, refer to online help Click here.

Who would use "Bulk Number Send"?
Companies who would like to send one SMS text message to a large group of people. In Australia, restrictions are imposed on who you can send messages to, and these restrictions apply to Bulk Messages. Please refer to Telstra Desktop Messaging Terms and Conditions before you send Bulk Messages.
Example: An insurance company wishes to send a notification message to a group of 150 customers, who have opted to receive these messages, regarding the expiry of their car insurance policy and request the customers to call to arrange renewal.
The message text might read: 'Dear customer, your car insurance policy expires next month. Please call us on 130000 to arrange renewal.'
Using the "Bulk Number Send" feature, the user could upload the mobile phone numbers of all 150 customers, and the message above would get sent to all specified mobile phones.

Which browsers are supported?
The Telstra Desktop Messaging web client is best when viewed with a modern browser, such as Chrome or Edge, these browsers also support modern versions of TLS protocol that is required.

What version of TLS security protocol is required to access TDM?
TDM supports TLS versions 1.2 and above.

What is Transport Layer Security (TLS)
TLS is a security protocol that encrypts the connections between communicating applications and networks and mitigates the risk of any third-party interceptions of data. For example, it is TLS that secures the connection between your computer and a website order-form when you make an online purchase. Similarly, it is TLS that secures the connection between Telstra Desktop Messaging and your organisations applications.

Why are older versions of TLS (1.0 and 1.1) not supported in TDM?
Implementing TLS1.2 is industry standard best practice for secure communications. By upgrading to a more up to date standard you are protecting your customer?s data and mitigating potential risk of any data breaches that could result from cyberattacks
